Arts by the Sea Festival 2026

The south coast's biggest free arts festival returns with an ELEMENTAL theme: fire, light and street theatre fill Bournemouth's gardens and town centre.

Dates
25 Sept 2026 – 26 Sept 2026
Location
Bournemouth Town Centre & Gardens

Every September Bournemouth hands its gardens and shopping streets over to the artists, and for one weekend the town looks like nothing you would expect from a seaside resort. Sculptures rise between the trees, brass bands and dancers appear on street corners, and after dark the sky fills with light and fire. Arts by the Sea 2026 carries the theme ELEMENTAL, and it is free to walk into.

About the festival

Arts by the Sea is Bournemouth's flagship cultural festival and one of the largest free arts events in the south west. First staged in 2011, it has grown into a two-day showcase of large-scale installations, live music, dance, spectacle and street theatre, staged across the town centre and the Lower Gardens. The 2026 edition runs on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 September under the banner ELEMENTAL, a theme built around the natural forces of fire, water, earth and electricity and how they connect people, places and the coast. For the definitive line-up and map, see the official Arts by the Sea website.

What to expect

The festival is at its best when you simply follow the crowds and the sound. Expect commissioned installations tucked among the lawns, roaming performers, and headline evening shows that lean into the elemental theme with aerial performance, light projection and pyrotechnics. A Green Hub and Community Zone add hands-on activities from local organisations, so there is something for every age. Because the programme spans several outdoor spaces at once, no two visits look the same, and part of the fun is stumbling on a performance you did not know was happening. You can see what else is running that weekend on our what's on pages.

Getting there and tickets

The core festival is free, with no ticket needed to enjoy the outdoor installations, music and street theatre. Some indoor or special events may need booking, and stage times are confirmed closer to the dates, so grab the official festival map and programme rather than guessing. Bournemouth town centre sits within an easy, mostly flat walk of the train and coach stations and several car parks, though public transport is the smoother choice on a busy festival weekend. Our travel information page covers routes, stations and parking to help you plan the journey.

Make a weekend of it

Arts by the Sea works beautifully as the centrepiece of a longer visit. The town centre stages are only minutes from the seafront, so you can pair the festival with a stroll along Bournemouth Pier and time on Bournemouth beach between performances. When you need a break, the town's restaurants are right beside the action for lunch or an early dinner. If you are travelling in, book ahead: the town's hotels fill quickly for festival weekends, and staying central means you can drift back for the after-dark shows without worrying about the last bus. Arts by the Sea Festival 2026 good to know

Where is Arts by the Sea Festival 2026 held?

The festival takes place across Bournemouth's town centre and gardens, with installations and stages spread through the Lower Gardens, the pedestrianised streets and public squares. Almost everything sits within a short, flat walk, so you can wander the whole trail on foot in an afternoon.

When does Arts by the Sea Festival 2026 take place?

The main festival runs over two days, Friday 25 and Saturday 26 September 2026. A programme of Fringe events, walking tours and neighbourhood Bitesized Festivals extends the celebrations either side, so it is worth checking the official listing for the full run of dates.

Is Arts by the Sea Festival free or ticketed?

The core festival is free to attend for all ages, with outdoor installations, street theatre and live music open to everyone. Some special or indoor events may be ticketed or need booking, so check the official programme before you travel to confirm what applies.

What time does Arts by the Sea start and how do I check stage times?

As an outdoor festival, activity builds through each day and the biggest after-dark shows land in the evening. Exact stage times and set lists are confirmed close to the event, so download the official festival map and programme rather than relying on last year's timings.

Is Arts by the Sea Festival family-friendly?

Yes. It is designed for all ages, with a Green Hub and Community Zone offering hands-on activities, plus street performers and installations children can explore freely. Because it is mostly outdoors, families can dip in and out at their own pace without needing tickets.

How do I get to Arts by the Sea and where can I park?

Bournemouth town centre is a short walk from the train and coach stations, and several multi-storey car parks sit nearby. Public transport is the easiest option during a busy festival weekend, so check travel and parking details in advance and consider arriving early.
