Bakehouse 24

Artisan sourdough bakery and café on Southbourne Grove, baking bread, pastries and cakes fresh daily and pouring coffee from Bad Hand Coffee Roasters.

Bakehouse 24 is an artisan bakery and café on Southbourne Grove, the main shopping street running through this corner of Bournemouth just back from the clifftop. It's the sister site to the original Bakehouse24 bakery in Ringwood, with further branches since opened in Lyndhurst and Milford-on-Sea.

Sourdough, baked daily

The bakery was founded by Pete, a baker who trained at one of London's bakeries before returning to open shop in his hometown of Ringwood. That grounding shows in the approach here: traditional sourdough methods, long fermentation and an emphasis on locally sourced, organic ingredients where possible, rather than shortcuts. Bread, pastries and cakes are baked fresh each day, and the Southbourne branch supplies enough of a following that queues at the counter aren't unusual on weekend mornings.

Coffee alongside the bread

Alongside the baking, Bakehouse 24 pours coffee from Bad Hand Coffee, a specialty roaster, a pairing of good bread and good coffee that's become the café's calling card for a morning stop or a slower weekend breakfast.

Good to know

The Southbourne café is open Tuesday to Saturday, 8am to 3pm, and Sunday 9am to 1pm, with Mondays off. It sits at 50 Southbourne Grove, BH6 3RB, an easy stroll from the beach and clifftop gardens, so it works well as a stop before or after time on the sand. Beyond its own cafés, the business also runs a wholesale side, supplying bread and pastries to restaurants, cafés and shops across the New Forest, Bournemouth and Poole.
