Cafe Tamago is a small, independent Japanese café on Wimborne Road in Westbourne, run by a married couple originally from Hong Kong who opened its doors in 2023. Rather than the sushi and ramen most visitors expect from a Japanese menu, it specialises in yōshoku, Japan's own tradition of Western-influenced home cooking, pitched at anyone missing a recent trip to Japan, planning one, or simply curious to try something different.
The food
The menu is built around a handful of comforting staples: curries such as a homemade Hamburg steak curry, donburi rice bowls including chicken katsu don, and omurice, Japanese omelette rice, with a prawn version among the options. There's also yaki and kake udon, pasta, appetisers, soups and a short dessert and matcha list. Mains sit mostly in the £13.95–£15.95 range. A dedicated vegan and vegetarian menu runs alongside the main one, and an allergen guide is published separately, which is handy if you're catering to mixed dietary needs.

The café is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, opening Wednesday to Saturday from midday to 10pm, with Sunday opening added during July and August.
