Frieda's is a traditional English tearoom tucked into Stafford Road, just off Bournemouth town centre, all vintage crockery, cake stands and unhurried afternoons. It's built its reputation on proper afternoon tea rather than a quick coffee stop, and that focus shows in everything from the finger sandwiches to the loose-leaf tea list.
Afternoon tea, done properly
The Classic Afternoon Tea (from £19 per person) is the headline: freshly prepared finger sandwiches, warm fruit scones with Cornish clotted cream and jam, and a stand of handmade cakes, all served on genuine vintage china. For a treat, there's a bottomless Prosecco option and a Luxury Champagne tea for two. A brunch menu runs alongside it, with Frieda's Famous Full English, eggs Benedict and pancakes among the choices.
Dietary options
The kitchen accommodates gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan and vegetarian diets, vegan cheese substitutes are available for a small supplement, and vegetarian dishes are clearly marked on the menu. Worth mentioning if you're booking for a group with mixed requirements.
A change of hands, same name
Frieda opened the tearoom in 2011 and ran it for well over a decade before handing over to new owner Cathy in late 2024, the name stayed, because, as the new team put it, the tearoom simply wouldn't be the same without it. In 2023 it even ran a "Tea Bus", serving afternoon tea aboard a moving vehicle along the coast, though that was a one-off rather than a regular fixture.
Good to know
Afternoon tea is by pre-booking only, and current published hours are limited to Wednesday and Saturday, check the website before you go, as days can shift with the seasons. There's parking at the rear, and the tearoom also takes private hire bookings for baby showers, hen parties and small celebrations.
