Hot Rocks has been part of the fabric of Bournemouth seafront since 1997, a two-storey, surf-themed restaurant and cocktail bar built into Pier Approach, just steps from the pier and the beach. It's an independent, family-run spot with a laid-back, beach-holiday feel, and one of the longer-standing names on this stretch of the front.
The food
The menu ranges further than most seafront restaurants: authentic Neapolitan wood-fired pizzas sit alongside steaks and ribs, fresh seafood, Thai and Indian curries, Indonesian-inspired noodles, pasta and Mexican dishes including a "special recipe" chilli, plus burgers such as the signature Big Kahuna. Allergen information is published alongside the menus, which are worth checking before visiting given the range on offer.
Atmosphere and history
The restaurant traces back to John Green, a local surfer and surfboard shaper who ran a Hot Rocks surf shop in Bournemouth before winning council backing in 1996 to replace a small beachfront unit with a two-storey, American-diner-style restaurant, beating out chain proposals in the process. A fire in October 2021 damaged the building badly, and it was rebuilt. Upstairs, the Ocean Lounge cocktail bar runs its own hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with DJs at weekends and private hire available for parties and corporate events.
Good to know
The ground-floor restaurant serves food from midday to 9pm, seven days a week, with seasonal variations, it's worth phoning ahead to confirm. A beachside click-and-collect takeaway service is also available for ordering online. Hot Rocks sits right on Pier Approach, so it pairs naturally with a walk along the seafront or an afternoon on the beach.
