Tucked into The Triangle in West Cliff, Mad Cucumber has been quietly doing its own thing since 2013, a fully vegan lounge café in a town not exactly short of meat-heavy pub grub. It's billed as Bournemouth's first dedicated vegan venue, born when a former hair salon was reworked, with help from family and friends, into the rustic, upcycled space that's still there today.
Homecooked, plant-based food
The kitchen keeps things simple and comforting rather than fussy: salads, a hearty nut roast, hot dogs and crushed avocado on toast all feature, alongside daily specials that change with what's in season. There's an in-house bakery too, turning out cakes, cookies and other treats, plus a smoothie bar for something colder. Gluten-free options sit alongside the vegan menu, and the team is used to catering for other allergens on request, always worth flagging when you book or order.
The setting
Mismatched furniture, soft lighting and upcycled decor give Mad Cucumber a cosy, unpretentious feel rather than a polished café look. It's dog-friendly, which suits its laid-back character, and works equally well for a quiet coffee and cake or a full lunch.

Opening hours run Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 4pm, with Saturdays extended to 6pm and the kitchen closing an hour before the venue shuts; it's closed on Mondays.
