Push through the doors on Old Christchurch Road on a Saturday afternoon and you will hear The George Tapps before you see it: a roar going up from one corner, a commentary feed layered over the hum of conversation, glasses landing on tables. This is a proper town-centre sports pub, generous in scale and unapologetically loud when the football is on. Step out to the garden, though, and it becomes something calmer entirely.
The food
The kitchen keeps things recognisable and serves through most of the day. The decked terrace at the rear is billed as the largest beer garden in Bournemouth, and on a warm evening it is one of the better places in the centre of town to sit outdoors with a drink. It absorbs the match-day overflow just as easily, so there is usually room to find a table even when the screens inside are packed.

The pub takes its name from Sir George Tapps-Gervis, the landowner whose investment helped turn a stretch of empty Dorset coastline into a seaside resort, which is a fitting bit of local heritage for an address this central.
