Look down as you walk along Undercliff Road in Boscombe and you'll spot a small plaque set into the paving naming a metal sculpture nearby: Chemical Wedding. It's one of seven public artworks that make up the Boscombe Art Trail, a set of sea-themed sculptures installed along the walk from the seafront up towards Boscombe's shopping streets.
The Boscombe Art Trail
The trail was created by the Dorset sculptor Andy Kirkby as part of Boscombe's seafront regeneration, and its pieces share a marine theme and common materials, expect diving helmets, boats and sea creatures dotted along the route, this sunfish-inspired piece among them. Interestingly, while the pavement plaque names it Chemical Wedding, records of Kirkby's own work list the same sunfish design as "Sun Fish" a small mismatch that's easy to miss unless you're looking closely.
Visiting
The sculpture sits right on the promenade near Boscombe Pier and the Urban Reef restaurant, so it's easy to take in as part of a walk along the front. Like the rest of the trail, it's outdoors, permanent and free to view at any time. It's a small but characterful stop on a stroll through Boscombe, see more of the area's coast and culture in our guide to things to do in Bournemouth.
